A greener, cleaner Europe
The LIFE programme plays a key role in contributing to the development of innovative waste prevention and management projects. Between 1996 and 2003, LIFE Environment funded 141 projects on different aspects of waste management and prevention ranging from industrial waste on construction sites, to community composting, to recycling of electronic and electrical waste.
Agriculture and the environment
While many valuable habitats in Europe are maintained by extensive farming, and a wide range of wild species rely on this for their survival, agricultural practices can also have an adverse impact on natural resources. EU policies, and notably the common agricultural policy (CAP), are therefore increasingly aimed at heading off the risks of environmental degradation, while encouraging farmers to continue to play a positive role in the maintenance of the countryside and the environment by targeted rural development measures and by contributing to securing farming profitability in the different EU regions.
Climate change - what is all about
Climate change is happening, and its impact on all of us is growing. Have you noticed storms and floods becoming more frequent around your area, or on television? Does it seem to be warmer in the winter, with less snow and more rain? Do you feel that spring is coming a little earlier each year, with flowers blooming or birds arriving before you expect them? These are all signs of accelerating climate change — or global warming, as it is sometimes known.
Environment and sustainable development in the mediteranean
The countries around the Mediterranean Basin have always been united by the sea, in a common destiny shaped by the unique environmental characteristics of the sea and its environs. In the mid-1970s, the peoples of these countries sought to safeguard this precious environment through the agreement of the Barcelona Convention and the establishment of the Mediterranean action plan (MAP) .

Natura 2000 'Challenges and Opportunities'
European public opinion has consistently demonstrated its interest in the long-term survival of Europe’s most valuable and threatened species and habitats. For this reason, in the 1990s, the Community created Natura 2000, and then at the Göteborg summit in 2001 undertook to halt biodiversity decline by 2010.
Nature conservation in the EU
Some people believe that protecting nature must mean cutting living standards, putting economic development into reverse, and limiting individual freedom to enjoy the natural world. The EU takes a different approach, based on the fact that people are part of nature, and the two work best in partnership.Wildlife protection can coexist with social and economic interests, but to make this happen we must implement ‘sustainable development’ – finding ways of improving our quality of life without causing harm to the environment, opportunities to future generations, and the people of both the rich and developing worlds.
Sustainable consumption and production in the European Union
Sustainable consumption and production is a challenge and an opportunity. More efficient use of resources in order to reduce economic costs and environmental impacts offers benefits to society, the environment and the economy. It creates business opportunities, for innovative environmental technologies as well as for services.
